OECD

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is an international organisation of thirty countries that accept the principles of representative democracy and free market economy. It originated in 1948 as the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC), led by Robert Marjolin of France, to help administer the Marshall Plan, for the reconstruction of Europe after World War II. Later, its membership was extended to non-European states, and in 1961, it was reformed into the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development by the Convention on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The growth and development of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has led to their wide diffusion and application, thus increasing their economic and social impact. The OECD undertakes a wide range of activities aimed at improving our understanding of how ICTs contribute to sustainable economic growth and social well-being and their role in the shift toward knowledge-based societies. The Committee for Information, Computer and Communications Policy (ICCP, www.oecd.org/sti/ict) develops policies to maximise the benefits of the Information Society. The Committee is planning a Ministerial meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy, to be held in Korea in June 2008.
